Though, it's not a professional review and may not be perfect, I will try to do justice to T220. I will be putting T220 through it's paces to check how much Samsung succeeds in its lofty aim. T220 is Samsung's attempt to provide mainstream 22" market with a monitor that can couple substance and style to decimate the opposition the way 226BW did it. But with "lottery fiasco" resulting in premature death of that monitor and the failure of subsequent Samsung 22" monitors to match 226BW, the company's reputation took a heavy beating. With 226BW, the company had shown that TN panel can also be a base for excellent monitors for general use and gaming. Samsung, being the self-professed leader in display technology, has set out to change this with Syncmaster T220. But unfortunately when it comes to 22" monitors, most companies believe in putting style over the substance. TN panel need not necessarily be bad and if the execution is right, it is quite enough for average users.

The market is full of TN panels, specially in India where we don't have companies like Eizo, and most 22" monitors in India which are not based on TN panels are provided by HP (through corporate orders) and Lenovo. No wonder, it's becoming the mainstream size and replacing 19" monitors.īut despite the popularity of 22" monitors, it is difficult to find a few good monitors of this size.

It is big enough for most users for gaming and movie needs, small enough to fit on office/work desks and is relatively easy on graphics requirements. Arguably, this is the most popular monitor size in the market right now. (I can't take credit for those pictures, I didn't take them, I google'd them.Market of 22" monitors is an interesting one. It has great image quality and color, the dynamic contrast works quite well for the most part, and the monitor just looks really nice. Overall, I’d say this is a great monitor, one of the best in the 22” category. It seems like a good idea, but mine wouldn’t stay attached, and had taken to popping off in the middle of the night, waking me up. Also, the screen features a plastic panel that covers up the back where the cords plug in. I don’t know why this happened in movies, because it didn’t happen in any game I tested on it. One major flaw however was that when watching movies with dark scenes in them, the monitor was often too bright and the scenes were distorted. Most movies looked great on the screen as well.

720p scales up quite nicely, and 1080p scales down too. The monitor scales HD resolutions very well. It also looks great when my 360 is hooked up to it. But usually the dynamic contrast enhances the image. The water would often look far too blue and the trees would look unnaturally green. This happened to me playing Age of Empires 3. However in some cases the dynamic contrast enhances the image too much and the colors get too bright. The brights were brighter, the darks were darker, and the colors seemed more vivid. Overall, games just looked better than the 1916W. The monitor performs extremely well in games due to its 2ms response time. Demo is interesting because it splits the screen in two and shows the standard contrast ratio on one side and the new dynamic contrast on the other so you can do a direct comparison. MagicColor is the Dynamic Contrast setting of the monitor, and it can be set to either off, Full, Intelligent, or Demo. The usual brightness/contrast are present, along with color tone and control and gamma settings, and a neat feature called MagicColor. As for the OSD on the screen, I found it to be very comprehensive.
